The pre-dawn Sigiriya Rock climb is structured as a photography sequence: the ancient water gardens below in the half-light on the way up, the frescoes and mirror wall mid-climb, and the summit golden hour as the Cultural Triangle opens below you. The drive south takes around three and a half hours, arriving in Mirissa in time for the lighthouse point at golden hour – one of Sri Lanka’s most photographed coastal moments, and one that rewards arriving before the hour to get the position right.

Between November and April, the pre-dawn whale watching boat departure from Mirissa harbour gives the best light conditions for photography and the calmest seas. Blue whales surfacing twenty kilometres offshore, spinner dolphin pods at full speed alongside the boat. The afternoon belongs to the stilt fishermen at Koggala and Ahangama – the authentic working versions arrive at specific spots in the early morning; your guide will know exactly where. Unawatuna at sunset closes the day.
