Requirements

Before You Rent

Driving License

An International Driving Permit (IDP) is required for all foreign licence holders. Your IDP must be accompanied by your original national driving licence. Sri Lanka also issues a local recognition permit at the AA office in Colombo (takes about an hour, costs approx. LKR 5,000) - some operators accept this as an alternative to an IDP.

Minimum Age

Industry standard in Sri Lanka is 21 years, with some operators setting it at 23 for SUVs or larger vehicles.

Passport or national ID

Required at handover, standard everywhere.

Security Deposit

Typically Rs. 50,000 (refundable) security deposit required before vehicle handover. The full rental amount for the entire rental period must also be paid in advance. The vehicle is released only after both the security deposit and full rental charges are settled. The deposit is refunded upon safe return of the vehicle, subject to inspection and any deductions for damages, fines or violations.

Insurance

Basic third-party insurance is almost always included in the rental. Comprehensive cover (covering own-vehicle damage) is either included or available as a daily add-on of around USD 5 - 10/day. The client should confirm exactly what their policy covers before publishing.

Fuel Policy

Full-to-full is the standard in Sri Lanka. You receive the vehicle with a full tank and return it full. Pre-purchase is less common but some operators offer it.

Vehicle handover locations

Standard options are BIA Airport, Colombo city and increasingly Kandy as a regional hub. Some operators also accommodate handover at their base in other cities by arrangement.

Safety & Responsibility

All Wagon Travels vehicles are maintained by our own team to a consistent standard of safety and cleanliness. Renters are responsible for the vehicle throughout the rental period – including any damage, fuel and compliance with Sri Lankan road laws.

In the event of an accident: contact Sri Lanka Police (119) immediately, photograph all damage before moving any vehicles, and call the Wagon Travels emergency number provided at handover. A police report is required for any insurance claim to be processed.

For breakdowns or mechanical issues, contact our team directly using the emergency number – we will arrange assistance or a replacement vehicle as quickly as possible.
