Your Route

Colombo, Sigiriya, Kandy, Nuwara Eliya, Ella, Yala, Galle, Colombo

Day-by-Day Journey

Arrival - Colombo

Your Wagon Travels vehicle meets you at the airport for the transfer into Colombo. A first evening in the city – the Dutch Hospital dining precinct, the Gangaramaya Temple in the late light, a walk along Galle Face Green as the ocean comes on. Colombo is a confident, interesting city and the right way to begin.

Colombo - Sigiriya

The drive north takes around four hours – this is the longest transfer of the trip, and a midway stop at the Matale spice garden breaks it naturally and rewarding. Dambulla Cave Temple in the afternoon, arriving at your Sigiriya forest lodge as the light fades over the tree canopy. The evening is yours entirely.

Sigiriya - Double Highlight Day

One of Sri Lanka’s great double-header days. The pre-dawn Rock climb at Sigiriya first – the mirror wall, the frescoes, the summit golden hour – back at the lodge by 9am. Rest through the midday heat, then the afternoon jeep safari in Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park for the elephant gathering. The fortress at dawn and a wild elephant herd in the afternoon: two experiences that represent Sri Lanka at its most extraordinary, in one day.

Sigiriya - Kandy

An optional Polonnaruwa extension adds an hour and a half to the drive south but gives you the Gal Vihara – four monumental Buddhas from one granite face – and is recommended for European travellers with a heritage interest. The Kandy House is the boutique accommodation reference for this night: a converted colonial manor above the city.

Kandy - Full Cultural Day

The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic puja ceremony in the morning, then Peradeniya Botanical Gardens – one of Asia’s finest orchid collections in 147 acres of curated tropical landscape. A walk around the Victoria Reservoir in the late afternoon. The Kandyan cultural dance performance in the evening: fire, drums and elaborate costuming at its most theatrical.

Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

The tea country mountain drive from Kandy climbs steadily through a landscape of almost unbroken green. A stop at Ramboda Falls, a working tea factory tour and a tasting session at the estate tearoom. Tea Trails private bungalows on a working estate above Castlereagh Reservoir are the most indulgent highland stay on this route – worth the upgrade if this is that kind of trip.

Nuwara Eliya - Ella (Scenic Train)

The train from Nanu Oya to Ella. Book the observation carriage well in advance and position yourself on the scenic left side. This is one of the world’s great rail journeys – three and a half hours that change how you think about what a transfer can be.

Ella - Yala

Little Adam’s Peak in the morning, then the drive via Wellawaya to Yala – the landscape transition from highland cool to dry scrub is one of the most satisfying on the island. Wild Coast Tented Lodge is the accommodation reference for Yala nights on a boutique-comfort itinerary. The late afternoon Block 1 safari entry is your first encounter with the world’s most leopard-dense habitat.

Yala - Full Safari Day

The 5:30am dawn drive and the afternoon drive. A private jeep with a specialist tracker guide – the difference between a competent safari and a genuinely memorable one is almost entirely in the quality of the person sitting next to the driver. Leopard sightings here are a statistical likelihood with the right guide, not a hope. Wild elephants, sloth bears, mugger crocodiles and the coastal lagoon birdlife complete what is consistently the finest safari day available in Sri Lanka.

Yala - Galle

The coastal drive west, with an optional short detour to Mirissa for whale watching between November and April. Galle Fort arrival at Amangalla or Fort Bazaar – boutique properties inside the old fort walls that make waking up here a particular pleasure.

Galle - Colombo - Departure

An unhurried final morning in Galle Fort – the rampart walk, the market, the café. Then the Southern Expressway north to Colombo and your departure transfer to the airport.
