Short, deliberate, and quietly indulgent – this itinerary isn’t trying to show you everything, just the handful of moments worth remembering forever. Candlelit temples, private villas and a slow coastline built for two.
Your premium Wagon Travels vehicle meets you at the airport with a couples welcome – rose petals, a small celebration cake and a warm personal greeting. This first evening is set up for comfort and romance: a Colombo rooftop pool or the beach at Negombo, a welcome dinner and an early, peaceful night. The journey starts gently.
The drive inland to Kandy takes around three hours, with a stop at a spice garden in Matale that is as fragrant as it is interesting. The Kandy House is the accommodation reference for tonight – the Ambalama private villa with its own plunge pool is the honeymoon option. The evening puja at the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, when the inner shrine opens to candlelight and the sound of temple drums, is a shared experience of remarkable intimacy for two people encountering it together for the first time.
The scenic drive through tea estates takes around two and a half hours. Ramboda Falls appears suddenly and is worth stopping for. A private tasting session at Pedro Estate – hosted in the estate tearoom with a selection of single-origin Ceylons – is arranged for the two of you. Gregory Lake in Nuwara Eliya at sunset, a small boat on still water surrounded by colonial hill-town architecture, is one of Sri Lanka’s most quietly romantic moments. The Heritance Tea Factory honeymoon suite is the accommodation reference.
The longest drive of the trip – around four hours south via Hatton – is broken with a stop at a highland viewpoint where the tea country spreads below you in every direction. Arriving in Bentota by the late afternoon, the river safari by private boat through the mangrove channels makes for a romantic and unexpected arrival activity – crocodiles, monitor lizards and kingfishers in the last of the afternoon light before the beach and the ocean take over.
Bentota is Sri Lanka’s most established honeymoon beach – calm, clear water, mature resort infrastructure and a coast that does not need to prove anything. A couple’s spa treatment in the morning, a short and very gentle visit to the Kosgoda sea turtle hatchery fifteen minutes up the coast, then the afternoon entirely at leisure. Water sports are available for those who want them. The beach does the rest.
A last walk on the beach before the drive north to Colombo – around two hours on the expressway. Indian travellers in particular appreciate a final hour at the Dutch Hospital shopping precinct or Odel before the departure transfer. Your Wagon Travels vehicle handles the airport drop.
