Day-by-Day Journey

Arrival - Colombo

Your Wagon Travels vehicle meets you at the airport and brings you into Colombo – the right city start for travellers arriving from Europe, Australia or Asia equally. The Gangaramaya Temple in the late afternoon light, the Dutch Hospital dining precinct and a walk along Galle Face Green as the city comes alive for the evening. A confident, welcoming introduction to Sri Lanka.

Colombo - Sigiriya

The drive north takes around four hours. The Dambulla Cave Temple midway breaks the journey with something genuinely extraordinary – five ancient rock-hewn shrines, 150 gilded statues and two thousand years of painted ceilings. Arrive at your Sigiriya forest lodge while there is still enough light to appreciate the landscape around you.

Sigiriya - Double Day

The fortress at dawn and a wild elephant herd in the afternoon – one of Sri Lanka’s great double-header days. The pre-dawn Sigiriya Rock climb: the water gardens in the half-light, the mirror wall, the frescoes, the summit view as the Cultural Triangle opens below you. Back at the lodge by nine. Then, in the afternoon, the Minneriya or Kaudulla National Park elephant gathering – hundreds of wild Asian elephants at the ancient reservoir, the most dramatic wildlife spectacle the island offers.

Sigiriya - Kandy

The drive south takes around three hours. An optional Polonnaruwa detour is strongly recommended for European travellers – the Gal Vihara, where four monumental Buddhas are carved from one granite face, is worth the extra hour and a half. The Kandy House as the boutique accommodation reference.

Kandy - Full Cultural Day

The full cultural heart of Sri Lanka in a single day. The Sacred Tooth Relic puja ceremony in the morning, Peradeniya Botanical Gardens in the afternoon and the Victoria Reservoir walk before the Kandyan cultural dance performance in the evening. Every hour of this day is genuinely distinct from the last.

Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

The tea country road from Kandy is one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding drives – not a transit but an experience in itself. Ramboda Falls, a working tea factory tour and the particular atmosphere of Nuwara Eliya’s colonial hill station arriving in the late afternoon.

Nuwara Eliya - Ella (Scenic Train)

The train from Nanu Oya to Ella. Book the observation carriage, sit on the scenic left side, stand in the open doorway and let one of the world’s great rail journeys do exactly what it promises.

Ella - Rest and Hike Day

Nine Arch Bridge – timed to a train crossing. Little Adam’s Peak through the tea estate. Ravana Falls as an optional addition. The Ella village cafés in the evening. This is Sri Lanka’s natural rest-and-recharge day, and it earns every quiet moment.

Ella - Yala

The Wellawaya pivot – the drive that takes you from cool green highlands to the flat dry scrub of the south in under three hours. The late afternoon Block 1 safari entry. Yala’s territory begins the moment you leave the tarmac.

Yala - Full Safari Day

The 5:30am dawn drive and the afternoon drive. A private jeep with a specialist tracker and the world’s highest wild leopard density per square kilometre. Everything else – the wild elephants, the sloth bears, the crocodiles, the coastal lagoon birdlife – is a supporting cast of considerable quality.

Yala - Galle

The coastal drive west, with an optional Mirissa detour for whale watching between November and April. Galle Fort in the evening – the rampart walk in the last light, a dinner in the fort and the particular pleasure of waking up inside one of Asia’s most extraordinary living heritage sites.

Galle - Colombo - Departure

A final unhurried morning in the fort before the expressway drive north. Shopping in Colombo if flight times allow. Your Wagon Travels vehicle handles the airport departure transfer.
